HOW TO DO CONCRETE COMPACTION
What are the methods used for concrete compaction?
Compaction
of concrete is one of the important site operations that together enable the
fresh concrete to reach its potential design strength and density by reducing the pores. Compaction is
the process which expels entrapped air from freshly placed concrete and packs
the aggregate particles together so as to increase the density of concrete. It
increases significantly the ultimate strength of concrete and enhances the bond
with reinforcement. Proper compaction also ensures that the formwork is
completely filled.
There
are two methods of concrete compactions:
- Rodding is a method of poking concrete with a rod. You can use a steel rod for rodding.
- Tamping is mainly used for the construction of roof slabs and pavements.
- Ramming it is not used for the compaction in reinforced concrete works or upper stories floors. Widely used for the compaction of ground floors.
- Mechanical compacting is done with the help of vibrators, which result in a more effective compaction.
- Needle vibration are generally used for structures like, footing, beams and column.
- While using the needle vibrator make sure that the needle is straight and the needle should not be touching the reinforcement and formwork plates.
- Do not vibrate the needle at a single place for more than 15 seconds and remove the needle slowly.
- Make sure that the vibrator’s shaft pipe doesn’t bend too much or the pipe can break and remember to clean the shaft pipe and needle after work.
If
concrete isn’t compacted after being placed it may result in it becoming
hollow(voids) . Compacting is an essential process, compacting removes air bubbles from
inside the concrete which increase its strength and durability. These were few
tips about concrete compacting which one should practice in the construction.
