PROBLEM IN PLASTERING

What are the defects in plastering?

It is seen often that plastered surfaces developed cracks and white patches, which affects the aesthetic of the building. This video help in identifying some of the problems in plastering causes and preventive measures.

Cracks

  1. Crazing cracks are the network of find crack, having hexagonal Pattern.
  2. These are shallow and do not extend to the hole depth of the plaster.
  3. Map cracking is also similar to crazing cracks but usually deeper.
  4. These are cause due to over travelling of rich mortar mix using the sand having high silt content rapid drying of plastered surface and adequate curing.
  5. These crack can be avoided by using well graded sand not using pure cement as finishing coat not overworking the cement finishes and providing adequate curing for minimum of 10 days.
  6. Grinning is the appearance of the masonry joints through the plaster, this can be prevented by providing two coat of plaster on solid background and application of under coat before plastering.
  7. Sometimes whitish crystalline substances are form on the plaster surface, this is known as efflorescence. This occur due to the presence of salt in the building material like Brick, sand, water etc.
  8. Efflorescence can be removed by dry brushing the affected surfaces applying solution of one part of hydrochloric Acid or Sulphuric acid with five part of water on the affected portion with scrub brushing, the surface shall then be thoroughly wash and dry.
  9. Defects in plaster affect the aesthetics although they don’t endanger the safely of the buildings.
  10. Most of the plastering defect can be avoided by:
  • Using well graded sand.
  •  Avoiding rich mortar mix.
  •  Avoiding over troweling.
  •  Avoiding using of pure cement while finishing.
  •  Timely and adequate curing.
