Mistakes while making roof casting.
Mistakes while making roof casting.
Roof Casting means completion of casting of reinforced cement concrete roof slab in compliance with the applicable Indian Standard (IS) Codes for civil engineering works, as amended from time to time and in accordance with Good Industry Practice.
- Not giving proper slope to roof/ slab: When the roof is flat, the rainwater can’t drain. It is important to ensure that the roof supports the rainwater to drain down to the exterior of the building and doesn’t damage the roof or the structure.
- Not giving adequate time for curing: Due to inadequate curing, concrete develops cracks and reduces the strength of the surface layer. Once the concrete is firm, it is essential to cure the roof for 2-3 days to strengthen the slab.
- Not giving importance to ratio of every material: Not giving importance to ratio of every material while preparing the concrete mixture.
Besides these 3 mistakes, there are many more mistakes to avoid as
below:-
- It is important to apply roofing nails in the right quantity and location to securely lock a shingle into its place; overdriven nails and improperly located nails.
- Avoid using Old Cement: Never use cement or a just-add-water concrete mix that’s more than a year old for any project you care about. Even new cement with hard lumps should not be used for concrete. Hard lumps indicate the cement has gotten moist at some point and lost some of its ability to harden.
- Absence of Leak Barrier and Drip Edge: The drip edge or leak barrier helps in protecting a building structure from water damage. They stop rain from entering the under areas of the roof edge and also helps in preventing the fascia from rotting. They also strengthen more weak areas of the roof.
- Last but not the least, safety compliance of proper PPEs (Personal Protective equipment) must be worn and safety belts, when working at height.
